Sometimes life can seem completely overwhelming. Whether it’s our personal life, our professional life, or a double whammy of both, there is no shortage of stuff to manage.
As you may remember from my previous post, it has been a roller coaster for my family lately. My son spent two months in a psychiatric hospital, I was diagnosed with a tumor in my face, the surgery left the right side of my face paralyzed, I needed eye surgery as a result, then I broke my foot in four places because my depth perception was off, and I am now in week three of my radiation treatments. It’s a lot to take in.
Many of you have graciously taken the time to comment here or on Facebook, send thoughtful emails, and continue to keep us in your prayers, and I am forever grateful. Some have asked how it’s possible to go through all of this and maintain a positive outlook.
When life sometimes throws at us more than seems possible to handle, we have a few options. We can give up, we can meltdown, or we can manage it one day at a time.
Between a book launch, a work trip to India in July, recovery, a potential foot surgery, and summer with two kids quickly approaching, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. When I do, I take a few really deep breaths (if your stomach isn’t moving more than your chest when you’re breathing, you aren’t breathing correctly), and I focus on one thing at a time, one day at a time.
It sounds trite, but it’s really the only option. As you go through your week, remember to breathe. When things start piling up, make a list and start to knock things out one at a time. All you can do is all you can do. There’s no point borrowing from tomorrow. Just handle what is immediately in front of you and take it a day at a time.
