Last Tuesday night, I was laying in bed reading an email (work/life balance faux paux 101), and my first reaction was defensiveness.  “Who does she think she is!” were the first  words I accidentally said out loud.  My husband Jay looked at me, chuckled, and said, “Don’t get sucked in to the vacuum cleaner.  She’ll suck you under”.  This is why I married the man…brilliant!  I made a split second decision and refused to let it get to me.

It is so easy to get sucked in to conversations, debates, arguments, and petty issues.  Some people seem to get pleasure  in engaging others in negativity.  The kicker is that you have a choice.  Getting sucked in is 110% optional.  It’s exhausting, and it’s usually not very productive.  When I think about the amount of time I’ve wasted getting sucked into debates or conversations that didn’t matter, I could have taken a nice, relaxing vacation!

Speaking of vacation, Jay and I are taking a short vacation next week to celebrate his Birthday, our 2-year anniversary, and a honeymoon we haven’t had yet.  I’ll be taking a blog break for a week.  Then, October 8th is the big NAMI walk!  To learn more about the walk, our involvement with NAMI, or to make a donation, click here.

Have a great couple of weeks, and watch out for vacuum cleaners!

  1. Thank you for the reminder Anne! There are so many vaccums at my workplace, I just smile at them and think I’m thankful for what I have. If I can’t change anything, “it is what it is”. Have a wonderful break and walk. Read you next time. 🙂

  2. I am reminded of my sister’s words constantly. “Choose your battles wisely and you will win the war. Not every battle is worth fighting.”

Have a wonderful time on your trip!
